Ants are the fourth pest on the specialty list and they arrive as two quite separate problems. The first is the trailing ants indoors: a line across a counter, along a window sill or up a wall to a food source. The instinct is to wipe the trail and spray the ants on it, and that is almost exactly the wrong response. The visible ants are foragers, a tiny fraction of the colony, and the colony itself is somewhere else entirely — in a wall void, under the slab, in a planter or out in the yard. Killing foragers changes nothing except which route the next ones take. The trail is useful precisely because it points back to the nest, and treatment is aimed there. The second problem is red imported fire ants, and in this county they are a genuine yard hazard rather than a nuisance. Mounds appear quickly after rain in open sunny ground: lawns, the edges of driveways, along fence lines and up against foundations. The sting is painful, they sting en masse when a mound is disturbed, and anyone with small children or animals in the yard has a real reason to deal with them rather than mow around them. Fire ants also move indoors along utility lines and slab expansion joints in hot dry spells looking for moisture, which is when a yard problem becomes a house problem.
